About This Spot

Stepping into Masakichi, you find yourself embraced by an unpretentious warmth that feels like a well-kept secret tucked away in the heart of Meguro. The gentle hum of quiet conversations blends with the subtle clinks of glasses and the comforting sizzle of skewers grilling over charcoal, creating an atmosphere that invites you to slow down and savor the moment. It’s the kind of place where pace softens, and the casual rhythm encourages sharing stories as much as plates.

This yakitori spot doesn’t rely on flash or fanfare. Instead, it offers a quietly confident celebration of technique and care, visible in the way each skewer arrives at the table—simple yet precise, honoring the ingredient’s natural flavors. The air carries the faint aroma of smoke and something decidedly homey, the kind of essence that lingers long after you leave.

Here, the experience unfolds with a gentle unfolding of tastes and textures—from the delicate tenderness of grilled chicken to the unexpected harmony found in bites paired with wasabi-infused avocado or smooth, velvety ramen. The offerings feel thoughtfully considered, evoking a sense of discovery without needing to be loud about it. It’s clear that this is a place where food and atmosphere intertwine, encouraging diners to relax into a shared, human moment over thoughtfully prepared comfort.

While the neighborhood charm gives it an easygoing vibe, Masakichi’s precision and depth of flavor hint at something more profound, quietly earning a devoted following among those who find joy in the subtle perfection of craft. Whether you’re sampling an assortment of skewers or unwinding with a glass of carefully selected sake, the mood remains refreshingly unpretentious—just a genuine invitation to enjoy good food, good company, and the gentle pulse of a local Tokyo evening.

Yummy! Not many locals, but the food was delish. We got 2 of each kind, shared between 3 people and that was perfect. I really really liked the whipped eggs on rice!

“Yes” this was on Ugly Delicious, and “yes” it lives up to the hype. This is hands down the best meal I’ve had in Japan.. maybe of all time. The preparation and presentation is immaculate, the flavor is finessed...need I say more? Get a reservation, because you will need it.

The place lives up to the hype in my opinion. I recommend doing Omakase followed by ordering few more pieces as needed. Chicken butt and neck meats were my favorite. The ramen is delicious too.

The food here was excellent. We did a random assortment of skewers plus a few of the side dishes. I was hoping they had Ginko beans but sadly they did not. We got some shishito peppers and mushrooms though. The place felt very casual and chill. They had an English menu as well. If you are in the area it’s a nice place to grab some skewers

Great Yakitori place made even more famous when David Chang cried after eating their food on Ugly Delicious. I can say that those tears were real because this was the best Yakitori I have ever had. The photos don’t do them justice , you have to try it for yourself. The chicken was absolutely tender and delicious without the need for any extra seasonings as well. Shout out for their excellent sake collection. Too bad juyondai was sold out

This restaurant was featured in the Netflix Ugly Delicious series by Dave Chang. In the episode BBQ, Yakitori Masakichi (5-2-8, Megurohoncho, Meguro-ku, Tokyo, 3-3792-5216): Chef Masahiko Kodama grills Niigata-sourced chicken seasoned with Niigata salt over Japanese binchotan charcoal. "This is the best yakitori I've ever had," Chang says in an emotional moment. We arrived at 9:30pm and they managed to accommodate us as last order is 10:15pm. We had the chicken omekase set of 5 variety (¥1480), chicken Breast, neck, liver, meatball and chicken wing which was the best. We also ordered the chicken tail and skin. The quality of the grilled food was done perfectly and the service was prompt. Totally enjoyable experience and recommend a visit.

This place gives you a mind-blown experience with food tasting. The fact that David Chang recommended it is one thing, but then if you get to try their food, you won’t be able to forget the taste. Now they tend not to accept a reservation from tourists, because there were too many “no-shows” which is a shame. So ppl please don’t do that.
